Sydney Pubs

Sydney sightseeing

Australians love pub culture, and although many of the pubs throughout Sydney take on different cultural themes, including English, Irish and German pubs, the concept of drinking and dining in a casual and relaxing environment is central to Australian culture.

All suburbs in Sydney feature a local pub, and the styles and offerings of each will vary, depending on the demographics and popularity of the area. Many areas have more than a few pubs, especially in inner-city area, so 'pub crawls' are a popular way to explore the pubs Sydney has on offer.

Over the past few decades, old and worn down pub buildings have been done up and the traditional pub environment has merged with a more stylish and trendy atmosphere. Many of the corporate office workers still attend a pub after work, and the establishments in the inner city can often appear quite exclusive, bordering on a restaurant feel. If you enter one you feel isn't relaxed, walk for another few blocks, as you're sure to find one you prefer the feel of.

If you're here for a shorter time, consider drinking or dining at some of the more prominent locations, such as the Coogee Bay Hotel with its massive beer garden situated right on the waterfront. If you are heading up north to Palm Beach, stop in at the Newport Arms Hotel and enjoy one of the largest beer gardens around. If you are keen to stroll between pubs and pick up some history of Sydney, head to The Rocks, as there are many traditional and charismatic pubs on offer.

Traditionally, pubs in Sydney served alcoholic beverages, meals and usually some form of basic accommodation. As the city grew and space became a premium, many pubs stopped offering accommodation and/or meals and many pubs now just serve alcohol. In contrast to some countries in Europe, beer served in pubs will usually be served very cold and without much head on the beer.

There are also a large number of bars in Sydney. The main difference between bars and pubs tends to be the d├ęcor and clientele each attracts. The CBD tends to have more bars than pubs.

The variety and number of Sydney pubs ensures there is a pub catering to everyone's tastes. Pubs feature strongly in the life of Sydney and are popular with visitors and locals alike.
