From Middle Harbour down to the headlands, Sydney has numerous marinas and jetties from which to set off sailing. In addition, sailing clubs and youth sailing clubs can be found on the shores of almost all harbour suburbs of Sydney.
The most prominent sailing event in Sydney is the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The event starts every year on Boxing Day, 26th December and ends 630 nautical miles later in Hobart, Tasmania. The yacht race’s humble beginnings in 1945 have grown to make it now one of the top three offshore yacht races in the world.
Since October 2001, personal watercraft have been banned on all waterways in the Sydney Metropolitan Area. Personal watercraft (PWC) are more commonly known as jet skis.
