David Jones has been around since 1838 when Welsh-born immigrant David Jones opened his first store in Sydney. David Jones then grew to be a national household name, with stores in every major Australia city.
David Jones remains the oldest department store in the world still trading under its original name. Today, David Jones prides itself on offering world class products to shoppers with discerning tastes. Sydney's Elizabeth Street and Market Street stores are jointly considered to be David Jones' flagship stores.
In 1885, brothers Albert Edward and Joseph Neal Grace founded Grace Bros in Sydney. Grace Bros grew to be a large department store chain in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. In 1983, Myer bought the Grace Bros chain.
The former Grace Bros stores added to the already vast Myer chain, creating what is now the largest chain of department stores in Australia. The original Grace Bros store on George Street has been redeveloped, and is now the Sydney Central Plaza. It includes Sydney's largest Myer store (the second largest in the world, after Myer in Bourke St, Melbourne) as well as a large range of other retailers.
These two department stores and their original locations are well worth a visit, both for their historical value and their continued appeal as major Australian retailers.
