Bare Island

Sydney car hire

Bare Island is located in the Sydney suburb of La Perouse, and while it is only a small rocky island that is connected to the mainland by a footbridge, this island is an important location for the history of Sydney. Originally,in 1885, it was chosen as a military location to protect the newly settled city from attack from its ‘backend', which is Botany Bay.

Bare Island

If you visit Bare Island, La Perouse, and the other areas around Botany Bay, you will mainly see an industrial area, filled with big ships and machinery. There are patches of greenery, and the areas are devoid of commercial or residential interferences, which means there are less tourists compared with the other historical areas of Sydney.

Bare Island was featured in the film Mission: Impossible II and it has been used for many different purposes. Although it was initially established for military purposes, it never fulfilled the desired function, as the island crumbled before it could be used. Later on, it was used as a retirement village, and today it holds a museum that showcases the history of the island and the local area. Visitors are welcome, and tours are frequently conducted.

Bare Island

Bare Island can be accessed by driving, and a few buses run in this direction also, however it is away from the popular areas of the city. La Perouse is a south-eastern suburb of Sydney, near the airport, and it is perfect to enjoy time on the beach while watching the planes take off and land nearby.
